Dr. -Ing. Nathalie Jean-Baptiste

Senior Research Fellow

Dr. Nathalie Jean-Baptiste is a Marie Curie Global Fellow associated to URBANgrad. Her work focuses on vulnerability assessment and climate related risks in low-income countries and the relationship between infrastructure, society and the environment. She is an architect graduated from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, holds a Master of Science and a Doctorate in Urban Studies from the Bauhaus University. Prior to joining the Technical University of Darmstadt, she worked as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig for 4 years. Her international experience bridging science and practice includes environmental education with a focus on organic waste management in Mexico and Australia as well as risk assessment and adaptation in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Tanzania. She is the Coordinator of the Housing Network of the International Association People-Environment Studies (IAPS) and Lead Coordinating Author of the chapter on Housing and Informal Settlements of the Second Assessment Report on Climate Change and cities (ARC3-2). She has taught different courses at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus University in Weimar.

• Urban development in emergent and developing countries, local governance and collective actions (formal and informal) for change, pro-poor growth

• Climate knowledge for supporting sustainable development and urban planning, risk management and adaptation

• Vulnerability of urban infrastructure systems, environmental and socioeconomic considerations for infrastructure planning

• People centered approach of waste management and sanitation

• Participatory action research, collaborative data collection, mixed (ecological and social instruments) and indicators

• Environmental behavior and education to reduce environmental impact
